SEPC MEG

SingaporeClient: Shell
EPC: Foster Wheeler Energy Ltd.

The Shell Group is to make its largest-ever chemical investment in Singapore with the construction of a new ethylene cracker, one of the world`s largest mono-ethylene glycol (MEG) plants, and modifications to an existing refinery. The integrated refinery and petrochemicals project, named the Shell Eastern Petrochemicals Complex (SEPC), is estimated to be completed by 2009-2010 and will serve as a crucial raw materials provider to Asia`s growing chemicals markets. Specifically, it will produce fibre-grade MEG for the region`s rapidly expanding polyester textiles and packaging industries.

The SEPC complex comprises three components that are being developed in parallel projects:

  • modifications to Shell Eastern Petroleum (Pte) Limited`s refinery on Pulau Bukom to enable it to produce a range of olefin feedstocks;
  • a world-scale ethylene cracker;
  • a world-scale MEG plant using new proprietary technology.
