The introduction of more Euro standards has also brought changes to the designation of steel qualities. Where we used to have St.37-2, St.44.3 and St.52.0, we now have S235JRH, S275J0H and E355 + AR. The most common steel qualities are listed in the Euro standards table, which also shows that the standards and their corresponding steel qualities for steel pipes have been divided into categories depending on the type of application. The first letter of the steel quality code indicates the category. The number that follows it indicates the minimum limit of elasticity. Some examples:

1. Pressure applications

a. EN 10217-1, quality P235TR2 (formerly DIN 1626, material St.37.0) 

P	= Pressure
235	= minimum limit of elasticity in N/mm²
TR2	= quality with specified properties relating to aluminium content, impact values and inspection and test requirements (as opposed to TR1, for which this has not been specified).

b. EN 10217-2, quality P195 GH (now still BS 3059, material ERW 320) 

P	= Pressure
195	= minimum limit of elasticity in N/mm²
GH	= properties at higher temperatures

2. Construction applications

a. EN 10210 /10219-1/2, S235JRH (formerly DIN 17120, St.37-2) 

S	= Structural
235	= minimum limit of elasticity in N/mm²
JR	= specified impact values at room temperature
H	= hollow section (in this case a round hollow section)

b. EN 10210 / 10219-1/2, S355J2H (formerly DIN 17120, St.52.3) 

S	= Structural
355	= minimum limit of elasticity in N/mm²
J2	= specified impact values at -20°C
H	= hollow section (in this case a round hollow section)

3. Mechanical applications (mechanical engineering, machining industry)

a. EN 10297, quality E355+AR (formerly DIN 17121, St.52.3)

E	= Engineering
355	= min. tensile strength in N/mm²
AR	= as rolled, with no further heat treatment

b. EN 10297, quality E355+N (formerly DIN 17121, St.52.3N)

E	= Engineering
355	= min. tensile strength in N/mm²
N	= normalized (hot-formed or normalized).
